BPSCA was formed by 4 Serving and Ex Serving Officers in 1988 at a meeting held at The Fir Tree pub, Crook. The late Derek Coupland O.I.C. H.M.Prison Service Dog Section, U.K., Inspector.George Grayson O.I.C. N. Yorks Police Dog Section (Retd.), Sgt. Steve Regan, Durham Constabulary, Instructor, No. 2. North East Region Dog Training School Harperley Hall (Retd.),The late Inspector Jim Hedley, O.I.C.Hull Police Dog Section.

We are an organisation comprising of serving and ex serving officers involved in the handling and training of service dogs. The BPSCA's purpose is to promote friendship, communication and an exchange of information on all matters relating to service canines both in the UK and abroad. The BPSCA is a members only organisation and is not affiliated to any official police service or other government related body.

Membership is open to serving and retired members of Dog Sections from the British Police, H.M. Prison Service, H.M. Forces, Ministry of Defence Police, British Transport Police, Customs & Excise and the U.K Atomic Energy Authority. Membership will also be allowed to handlers from similar bodies overseas. Affiliated membership is allowed for civilian dog handlers.

Magazine

The BPSCA publishes an quarterly magazine called 'The Service Dog' which contains articles on canine behaviour, general dog related articles, service dogs, training and service dog events. The magazine is free to BPSCA members or £2.50 to non members.
